Warning Lights

“Please, please, please help me make it to a gas station,” was my prayer as I slowed my speed for maximum fuel efficiency.  It wasn’t a fancy prayer, but it was heartfelt.  I didn’t want to be stranded along the highway on a gray, 28℉ morning.

I really shouldn’t have been driving with a nearly empty tank.  The low gas warning light came on shortly after I left home to deliver a promised batch of cookies.  Why didn’t I fill up on my way?  Because I ignored the warning.

It’s an acquired habit that I’ve learned from my husband’s car.  The fuel tank sensor has gone out on the Corolla, and the warning light is always on.  We don’t want to pay for an expensive repair on such a high mileage vehicle, so we’ve learned to set the trip odometer each time we fill up, and ignore the warning light.

Maybe it’s not such a good idea.

Do you ever get the sense that God’s trying to tell you something?  That He’s trying to get your attention?  Listen to Him.  As the Psalmist said, “Today, if you would hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”  If we get into the habit of ignoring His voice, we shouldn’t be surprised if we find ourselves stranded alone in the cold.
